About Muriel

Muriel Gordon, who resides in Long Island , New York , was born in Kingston, Jamaica.  She worked as a governess for children before she began seeking an education in nursing.  She quickly progressed from a nurse’s aide to LPN, and then achieved an Associates degree in nursing from Nassau Community College . She worked as a nurse at Wyckoff Heights Hospital in Brooklyn and then began working as a public health nurse in Suffolk County.  She then pursued and achieved her BSN, Masters Degree and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner license.

In 1988, during her world travels, Muriel Gordon was deeply affected by the extreme poverty of the areas wherein she was traveling.  Thus began her journey to provide health and humanitarian aid to the impoverished and disadvantaged people of the world.  

Since that time, Muriel has coordinated health and humanitarian fairs in Jamaica, Ghana, Russia, Thailand, China, South Africa, Kenya, Australia, New Zealand, the Amazon Jungle, Nigeria and other countries.  Before each fair, she gathers contributions and donations of used medical supplies, equipments, drugs from drug companies, clinics, and hospitals plus toys, clothing and nonperishable foods.  Once everything has been gathered, she heads to a needy community to hold a health fair.   At the health fair, she distributes healthcare to the needy villagers as well as toys and clothing.

In 2003, the Muriel Gordon Foundation was formed and incorporated as a non-profit corporation in the State of New York .

The health fairs the Foundation organizes, provides residents of third world communities with an opportunity for a medical examination as well as simple humanitarian aid. 

Muriel also utilizes her skills as a Public Health Nurse for the Suffolk County Department of Health Services at the Riverhead Health Center in Riverhead, the Tri-Community Health Center in Amityville, as well as Southside Hospital in Bayshore Long Island, New York.  

Muriel is also a member of the Suffolk County Association for Nurses, the New York State Nurses Association, the National Association of Nurse Practitioners and Sigma Theta Tau International.

The Nigerian government honored Muriel in 2003 by putting her picture on all twelve months of their official calendar which is put out by the Bishop of the country.
